What to expect
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, particularly when it is for your child. I want the process to feel straightforward and clear from the beginning.
I offer 50-minute weekly sessions, either in person or online.
Getting started
I offer a free initial telephone conversation so that we can talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you are looking for. It is also a chance for you to ask any questions and get a sense of whether working together might feel like the right fit.
If we decide to take things further, we will arrange an initial meeting. For children aged 12 and under, I will usually begin by meeting with their parents or carer. This is an opportunity to talk together about your child, their developmental experience and any concerns or questions you may have. It gives us space to begin thinking together about your child’s emotional world, what they may be communicating.
For older children and adolescents, we can think together about whether it would feel best for them to meet with me independently from the outset, or whether they would like a parent or carer to be involved initially.
The first session
The first meeting is about beginning to think about what has brought the young person to therapy. I will also explain confidentiality and its limits in an age-appropriate way. I want young people to understand from the beginning what they can expect from their sessions and when information might need to be shared for their safety.
Continuing with therapy
If, after the initial meetings, we feel that therapy would be helpful, we can agree to continue with regular weekly sessions.
The length of therapy will be considered individually. Some young people may come for a shorter period, while others may need more time. We can review the work together as it develops and think about when it feels appropriate to continue, change direction or begin working towards an ending.
Online sessions
Online sessions are available where this is appropriate for the young person. For adolescents and young adults, online therapy can offer greater flexibility around school, university and other commitments. We can discuss the different options during our initial conversation.
